About the course
The Algonquin's original layout was designed by Donald Ross and included 27 holes. In 1999, Thomas McBroom created a new 18 holes that used the same land but none of the routing of the previous course. McBroom devised a course that would give pleasure to resort players. Challenging, yes. Overbearing, no. Built on a crust of rock platted with sand -- McBroom juggled hole locations to accommodate the site rather than blast it with dynamite -- the course, located a mile from the hotel, has five sets of tees stretching from 5,027 to 6,908 yards. The par-36 front nine, carved from a forest of evergreens, birch, and cedar, has water in play at four holes and is the sturdier half of the course. The par-35 back nine offers one of the most scenic and exhilarating stretches of golf in eastern Canada.
