About the course
Ireland's second oldest golf club and one of the country's premier sporting theatres, Royal Dublin provides visiting players with a combination of a superb championship links course and a degree of hospitality that mirrors its historic development. Though laid out entirely on flat land Royal Dublin is as a formidable links as you are likely to encounter. A traditional out-and-back links course, the two nine must nevertheless be handled quite differently, prevailing winds dramatically changing the aspect of each. You will enjoy the excellent condition of the championship Links and particularly the fine and testing closing holes. In particular the decision to try the long carry over the "garden" is one many golfers have regretted. Royal Dublin has staged numerous championship events including the Irish Open, Irish Open Amateurs and Close - Also the Carrolls Irish Open won by Seve Ballersteros in 1983 and 1985 and by Bernhard Langer in 1984. Royal Dublin hosted the Toyota Challenge of Champions in 1986 between Jack Nicklaus and Seve Ballesteros. In 1992 the Forte P.G.A. Seniors was also held in Royal Dublin with Tommy Horton the winnter and "himself" Christy O'Connor runner up. Royal Dublin ranks no. 62 of "The 100 greatest courses in the British Isles", Golf World 11/96. There is an excellent dining room and a feature of the clubhouse, which is one of the finest in Ireland, is the Grill Room off the locker area - ideally suited for a golfer in a hurry or after your game of golf, with a wide menu selection (Grill Room - dress informal or dining room - jacket and tie). Of course, no visit to a golf course would be complete without the final few rounds - in the clubhouse. Royal Dublin prides itself on its hospitality to visitors. The Lumsden Room located on the first floor (dress informal) or the Member's Bar (jacket and tie) situated overlooking the 18th green with a panoramic view of the course, sea and surrounding landscape. History: Few Irish golf clubs can boast as illustrious a history as ROYAL DUBLIN. The inaugural meeting of the DUBLIN GOLF CLUB was held at 19 Grafton Street in the early summer of 1885. A selection of "gentlemen" interested in the game of "golf" converged with the purpose of playing and promoting the game in Dublin. Originally the club was based in Dublin's renowned Phoenix Park but as interest and membership grew a new home had to be sought. In 1989, after a brief sojourn in Sutton, the club moved to its present home at Bull Island. After the Great War the job of redesigning the course was given to H.S. Colt, even at that time a world famous golf course architect, and it is the fruits of his labour that players have been enjoying since 1920. Other amenities include: ROYAL DUBLIN has the amenities to match its course. Visitors will find the club easy to access, being a mere fifteen minutes from the centre of Dublin and with plenty of on-site parking. Locker-rooms are provided expressly for the use of visiting players, making you feel more at home while you enjoy your round of golf. To ensure that your day goes as smoothly as it can, a time-sheet is in operation when your booking is made. Courses nearby: Portmarnock, Portmarnock Links, Deerpark.
