About the course
This is an inspiring course in an inspiring location. Although the Championship Golf Course was only opened in 1996, it reflects the maturity and history of the 1,000 acre/404 hectare estate. It was the foresight of the Slazenger family, who took over Powerscourt in 1961, to develop a course that would rank as one of the best in Ireland. Using the picturesque natural landcape Peter McEvoy designed a testing yet rewarding challenge. Situated just 12 miles south of Dublin the course has several different moods. It starts with what could be described as parkland that is hemmed in by hedges, ancient oaks and beech trees. The first hole is a par 4 that gently doglegs its way to the right. A natural line from the tee is the church spire, which keeps the golfer away from the fairway bunkers and opens the green from the approach shot. Bravely rewarded on the next three holes with the player being tempted to take risks, but high scores await those who overstep the mark. Particularly at the 4th where an accurate tee shot is essential. The par 3 5th is indicative of the short holes playing from raised tees to heavily guarded greens. With the parkland having a more open appearance, clear views of the Wicklow hills and the majestic Sugarloaf mountain are ever present. One of the hallmarks around the course are the contoured undulating greens. The relatively short par 4 7th, being an example of this, once the fairway bunkers on the left have been negotiated. The green is split into no less than four different levels. As well as being strokes index 1, the 8th has a links-style to it, not made any easier as it quite often plays into the breeze. After quietly changing to moorland, the back nine starts with two tough par 4's the 11th being the only hole that bunkers are not present on. A sweeping par 5 affords the golfers a chance to improve their score, but careful planning is needed to take full advantage of the opportunity. During a great amateur career Peter McEvoy played some of the world's great courses. Using his experience he continues to tempt the player on cleverly designed holes. Surely the 12th at Augusta was on his mind when creating the par 3 16th, already dubbed the signature hole. Measuring just 126 metres/138 yards, obstacles such as a lake, pot bunkers and a very small target area have to be overcome. The 17th is maybe one of the best holes in the country. From a raised tee the slight dogleg is flanked by a steep grassy bank on the left and Norwegian spruce on the right, the lake that guards the front of the green is backed up by an overhanging tree that can easily bring a ball down to a watery grave. A backdrop for the 18th includes the impressive Estate House, the Sugarloaf and the Georgian style Clubhouse. This provides no lack of inspiration to hit a good final tee shot. A choice must be made either to place the ball between the fairway bunkers or hit it right of them, opening up the green but making the approach shot longer. A combination of the course, the clubhouse and the people ensure the Powerscourt experience is enjoyed. The clubhouse has been constructed in Georgian style in keeping with Powerscourt House and the magnificent course. Upstairs the beautifully proportioned function and dining rooms can seat up to 120 for a meal. The fully licensed bar leads out onto the balcony overlooking the 9th and 18th holes. The Golf Academy set in the idyllic surroundings of Powerscourt Estate, boasts some of the finest practice facilities in Ireland. With guidance and help of the expert PGA Professionals, learning golf can be both enjoyable and rewarding. A great variety of instruction programmes are offered tailored to meet your specific needs. Individual lessons, video lessons, academy session, residential programmes. Other attractions: Powerscourt Gardens & Waterfalls. This is North Wicklow's best known tourist attraction: 47 acres of garden, location for films, tree trail of unique tree collection, children's play area, riverside picnic spots, tea rooms, pet's cemetery, craft and gift shop, pepper pot tower, garden centre, Powerscourt Waterfall (the highest in Ireland, 5 kms from gardens), Powerscourt House Visitors Centre.
