About the course
The course is of championship standard and is set on 120 acres/49 hectares of parkland. It is mostly flat terrain with an abundance of trees. Notable features of the course are its four par 3's, the long par 4 11th and the final four holes which have often ruined a fine score. A feature of the course at the 10th tee is the "Fulacht Fiadh", an ancient Irish kitchen. This type of kitchen dates back to the Bronze Age when these ancient cooking places were horseshoe-shaped mounds made up of small pieces of blackened stone and situated close to a water source or in a marshy or formerly marshy ground. The main hazards are trees which encircle the greens. The course promises a pleasant round of golf over flat and rolling landscape. The club hosted the Carroll's Irish Matchplay Professional championship in 1973 which was won by Christy O'Connor Jr. In 1984 it was the venue for the All Ireland Mixed Foursomes final and the following year hosted the All Ireland Cups and Shield finals. It is a popular venue for various regional play-offs and finals for the Leinster area. Visitors will find the golf club very friendly where people can relax in a convivial and enjoyable atmosphere. Bar, meals and snooker facilities are available to the visitor and member alike. Other attractions: Kilkenney Castle: World-renowed restoration of 14th century Norman castle, formerly home of the Marshalls and Butlers (Dukes of Ormonde). Castle Yard: Complex of studios, workshops and retail outlets operated by Kilkenny Civic Trust and Craft Council of Ireland. Rothe House: Restoration of this 16th century merchant's house as headquarters and museum for Kilkenny Archaelogical Society. St. Canice's Cathedral: Fully-restored 13th century cathedral on the site of the first monastic foundation in the city (7th century).
