About the course
The Kildare Country Club, known as The K Club has been developed from a long time desire of Dr Michael Smurfit, the Chairman of the owners - The Jefferson Smurfit Group - Ireland's largest company. The Estate, acquired in 1988, is rich in history and dates back to the 6th century. The most prominent former owners were the Barton family in whose hands it was for 121 years. For the wine connoisseurs, the famous French vineyards of the same name will immediately make the connection, and they will be able to sample these wines in both the Clubhouse and the adjoining luxurious hotel on the estate grounds. The focal point of The K Club is the championship golf course, although there is much more to offer in Ireland's first world class country club. The Estate comprises of 330 acres/134 hectares, including one mile of the famous River Liffey, which meanders through the grounds. Originally the lands were dominated by the flat paddocks and some 120 acres/49 hectares of magnificent woodland. The designers of the golf course was the legendary Arnold Palmer and his team, led by Ed Seay. They produced a fantastic layout which cleverly used the existing woodland and water. Work commenced in May 1989 and the golf course was finally completed in September 1990. Arnold Palmer made several visits and has brought his own personal style to a golf course which has already received flattering reviews. Arnold Palmer believes that the golfer should be challenged from the first tee shot, down to the final green. At the same time, the golf course should be fair and enjoyable for the average club golfer and the professional alike. Visitors will concur that this principle is achieved when playing the golf course. On the domestic front, the course has already hosted the 1992 and 1993 Irish Professional Golf Championship. On the international scene The K Club hosted in September 1992 the Bi-Annual Mini Ryder Cup between the Club Professionals of America and Europe. These events confirmed the superb challenge of this championship course. The Smurfit European Open is at The K Club in 1995, 1996 and 1997. This tournament is marked among the top 5 tournaments on the European Tour. Memberships of The K Club range from a £10,000 entrance fee and £2,500 per year in subscriptions, up to 50 year Golden Membership, which is a £125,000 one time payment. The K Club has already attracted members from all over the world and a day at The K Club will provide one of golf's memorable experience. Other amenities include: Outdoor tennis courts, exercise centre, indoor swimming pool, health and beauty centre, croquet. Other attractions: Trout fishing, coarse fishing within the grounds. Off site both equesterian activities and shooting are organized by The K Club. Courses nearby: Citywest, Hermitage, Luttrellstown.
