About the course
Ireland has long been renowned throughout the golfing world for the quality of its links golf courses, such as Portmarnock, Ballybunion and Baltray which are known and revered wherever the game is played. Seapoint Golf Course is bounded to the south by the famous Baltray Links and to the east by a magnificent sandy beach. Seapoint Links was designed by Ryder Cup player, Des Smyth and Irish Amateur International, Declan Branigan. Both are natives of the area with a great understanding of tradition and sensitivity for the nature of links golf. Seapoint is a truly unique links course with water coming into play on six of the first nine holes. In addition, the western boundary is lined with an abundance of mature trees. In the summer, the rhododendrons are in full bloom, adding a splash of colour to the links. Every last inch of the course is genuine links land with a sand base of two to three feet throughout the 260 acres/105 hectares" says Des Smyth, and the beauty of this is that the course is perfectly playable twelve months of the year. The layout of the course takes the form of two loops with the first and the tenth tees starting at the clubhouse. Seapoint Links provides a year round challenge to all standards of golfers. The best advice is to hit the ball straight, stay on the fairway, keep the head down and above all enjoy your golf. Built in 1989 and because of the nature of links grass, it took over three years to mature playing standard. The course opened for play in June 1993 and has delighted (and challenged!) golfers ever since. The construction of the course involved the movement of over 150,000 tonnes of sand. It requires the maintenance of 11,000 square metres of tees, 400,000 square metres of roughs. Tees, greens and fairways are irrigated by a computer-controlled system which comprises 15 kilometres of piping and over 300 sprinkler heads. The clubhouse was designed by architects Burke-Kennedy-Doyle and Partners to meet the needs of members and visitors alike. Great emphasis was placed on using Irish products in the construction of the building. The timber used throughout is Irish grown and the stone finish surrounding the clubhouse is a sandstone from Co. Leitrim. The restaurant and the bar have commanding views over the whole course as well as the beach and sea. Courses nearby: County Louth
