About the course
Nestled amid rolling green landscapes, magnificent scenery and the unspoilt beauty of Ireland Mount Juliet is 1,500 walled acres of unspoilt woodland, pasture and formal gardens, secluded in the southeast of the country. Here, twelfth century origins, a leisurely pace of life and a traditionally generous hospitality combine with world-class sporting amenities and luxurious facilities, making Mount Juliet at once a place of contrasts and surprises, unique in its combination of old and new. Mount Juliet's Jack Nicklaus championship course has quickly become known as the 'Augusta' of Europe. Home of the Carroll's Irish Open in 1993 and the Murphy's in 1994 and '95, winning unanimous praise from the European tour players. While Nicklaus' design is a stiff test for the professionals, the forward tees make it equally rewarding for the higher handicap golfer. The course: At the first approaching the green from the left side the fairway makes this opening hole a good birdie opportunity. At the 2nd an accurate drive across the stream to the centre of the fairway gives a clear approach to the green, too long a drive closes out the green. The 3rd is not a hole for the faint-hearted, with up to 170 yards/153 metres of carry over water, accuracy is the watchword for this feature hole. This is followed by a most demanding hole throughout with a narrow opening from the tee, and the green is protected by water to the right and the rear. The 6th is a long and deceptive par 3, careful thought must be given to club selection to guarantee reaching the green. The 7th: A drive to the left of the fairway between the trees encourages a good approach shot. Be cautious of the green which slopes towards the river. The 8th, a par 5, out of reach for even the best of golfers in two. The green has a marked cross fall from right to left, and balls missing the green on the left side wil finish in a deep depression. The 10th, a hole with two approaches to the green, safely to the left and around the trees gives a clear shot to the green whereas the right hand side approach needs to carry a group of bunkers. Followed by a par 3, the hole-in-one opportunity as experienced by Colin Montgomerie. The 14th is a very challenging par 3 with bunkers almost encircling the green which has a marked right to left cross fall. An accurate drive to the left of the fairway with a careful approach shot to avoid the enormous bunkers surrounding the green is demanded at the 16th. The finishing is a difficult par 4, flanked by a lake to the left and large bunker protecting the green - a par here is a definite bonus. Mount Juliet is rated #27 of "The 100 Greatest Courses in the British Isles", Golf World 11/96. An extensive irrigation and drainage system makes the course playable all year round. Mount Juliet is also the home of Ireland's only David Leadbetter golf academy, which offers players of all abilities the opportunity to learn from the world's most successful instructors.
