About the course
Situated close to gardens that are famous for their exuberant vegetation, this course offers fabulous views over Funchal Bay, the sea, and the far-off «Ilhas Desertas». There are few areas on Madeira Island where construction of a golf course is possible. This, however, could not stop the birth of a second course, soon after the completion of the Madeira Golf Club. This new course, Palheiro Golf, has helped to turn the island into a golfer's paradise. Built close to the famous gardens at Quinta do Palheiro which date back to the beginning of the last century and are known for their wonderful and exotic diversity of flora, the course is only 15 minutes from the capital, Funchal. From each one of its 18 holes, which run through a pine forest and thick vegetation, one has spectacular views of the sea and the distant «Ilhas Desertas». The design of Cabell B. Robinson, a former assistant of Robert Trent Jones combines Madeiran hills, ridges and deep valleys with golfable terrain to procude a dramatically interesting course, playable with great enjoyment by the visiting and and casual golfer. Nearly two thirds of the course is carved out of pine forest and botanical woodland established over the last 100 years. Magnificent specimen trees and shrubs, lush vegetation and the splendid view of the bay and out to see have resulted in one of Europ's most beautiful courses. Five par 3s increase the number of 'fun' holes over the customary fours. Fairway contouring and bunker positions will demand accurate tee shot splacement to set up the best approach to the contoured greens. Players will benefit from the numerous tees on each hole, and generous fairway widths. Bogey golf, even par golf, is feasible for the average player. For the best combination of holes, Palheiro is designed as a continuous 18, like St Andrew's, Sotogrande and other famous courses. The stylish clubhouse is in the tradtitional Madeiran style using local stone, red titling and marble quarried from the Portuguese mainland. It lies below the eighteenth green, sharing with a spectacular views over Funchal Bay. The Pro shop stocks an extensive choice of the best equipment and specially selected clothing.
