About the course
Madeira Golf Club boasts is one of Europe's most spectacular golf courses. Since 1993 it has been the stage for the opening tournament of the European Circuit of Professionals. A scene of such beauty, with a backdrop of stunning mountain scenery, unfolds before the eyes of anyone visiting Madeira so that he or she will surely be left breathless. At an altitude of 500 metres/1,640 feet above sea level and commanding spectacular views of the south coast of the island, this course designed by Robert Trent Jones and opened in September 1991, brings you face-to-face with a number of feature holes played across gaping ravines and quite a few breathtaking downhillers. Campo de Golf da Madeira is one of Europe's most fabulous mountain golf courses. Because it is built on such irregular and vegetation-covered terrain, huge efforts have been necessary to bring this project to fruition. Trent Jones managed to design 27 holes (though so far only 18 have been built) in a logical and interdependent manner. It is not a very long course, but final scores depend heavily upon the wind. Players should also be fit enough to ensure they do not arrive at the last hole completely exhausted. If not, they should make use of a golf cart. One of the most spectacular (on the Machico round) is hole no. 4, a par 3; the drive onto the green must be played over a ravine filled with very dense vegetation. Since 1993 the course has staged the Ilha da Madeira Open, the first tournament on the European Circuit. The course received effusive praise from the professionals taking part in the tournament. Other attractions: The region of the Island: One hour's flight from Lisbon to the Portuguese island of Madeira, a volcanic mountain in the Atlantic Ocean, 480 kilometres/300 miles west of Africa. The volcanic geography of this island in itself makes for a fascinating visit. Majestic mountains rise abruptly from the sea, leaving the rugged coastline without even a trace of sand. Shrouded in a silvery sub-tropical mist, plunging valleys host a unique collection of vegetation, with eucalyptus and jacaranda trees in abundance.
