About the course
Royal Birkdale is ranked #9 of "The 100 Greatest Courses in the British Isles" and #26 of the "Top 100 World Courses". Laid out on and through a wasteland of sand dunes this course has the perfect terrain for a links - with really huge dunes. During championships these become natural vantage points for the crowds of spectators watching play below them. The course winds its way along the valleys between the dunes which give shelter and a tranquil sense of isolation to the golfer. The course is open, wide and immense. There are no blind shots. The greens are pushed firmly into the dunes, often with a screen of willow scrub on either side, making them, depending on the wind, challenging targets. Royal Birkdale is the venue for many international events, and will host the Open in 1998. Courses nearby: Hillside, Formby, West Lancashire. Southport & Ainsdale.
