About the course

Like so many long-established clubs, Kingsdown's course today is vastly different in layout from that of 1880. The need to 'grow more food' during two Great Wars meant that parts of the land were lost for golf, and for a while the club played on a 13-hole course. Since its opening many changes have been made. Further major alterations were made in 1987. It is always in excellent condition and a joy to play. There are many outstanding holes. The first needs a good straight drive, a hook will end on the road and a slice could leave a most difficult shot to a well guarded green. The 8th at 365 yards/334 metres can be a very dangerous hole which offers two alternatives. You can drive straight to the green which requires a carry of 260 yards/238 metres over the out-of-bounds, or you can play the conventional dogleg. The 12th hole was extended by creating a new green, with a spectacular view down the valley to Bath. The 16th is an excellent par 3: hit the right club straight and it's easy, make a mistake and the punishment can be severe. The 18th had always been a disappointing finishing hole, and so a major construction project was untertaken, involving the building of a new green set in rolling contours, and the 18th tee was extended 50 yards/46 metres back into the woods. This involved the shifting of some 5000 tons of material and the laying of about an acre of turf. The reward is a finish worthy of the rest of the course. The clubhouse offers excellent food and wonderful surroundings.
