About the course
Leatherhead Golf Club was opened in 1903 and although the course has undergone many changes since then it remains, as it was originally designed, a challenging test of golf through Surrey parkland dominated by mature oaks, where accuracy enjoys at least as much reward as length. The first plays as a long par four from the yellow tee and is a daunting opening hole. The drive must be placed between two marker oak trees and then the ditches to the front of the green must be carried with what will be either a wood or a long iron. Many play short with the second shot relying on an accurate pitch to provide an opportunity for par. After the respite offered by the short second the golfer faces a real tiger at the third. To get sight of the green the tee shot must be played to the right and short of the oak dominating the centre of the fairway. From the back tee it is usually preferable to take a iron 1, for to be too long will mean playing under or over the tree and inevitably you will be short. The fifteenth is a long par 3 - 208 yards/190 metres. If you are short or right you will invariably finish in a bunker. Back from the green to the 16th, which is an excellent five and only the longest and straightest hitters will reach the elevated green in two. The drive through the pine trees is tight and on the second shot beware the fairway bunker. The pitch must have height or be well judged in pace. Downhill to the par four seventeenth, where everyone holds his or her long driving contest. Don't hook from the tee. The last in another par three towards the clubhouse. The entrance to the green is narrow and well protected. Leatherhead stands for an enjoyable day.
