About the course
Dr. Alister MacKenzie of Augusta National fame and Harry S. Colt were responsible for this fine layout in first class golfing country. This course forms a part of the famous stretch of golfing territory on the northern fringe of Leeds. Alwoodley's course is rated #39 of "The 100 greatest courses in the British Isles", Golf World International 11/96. The course stretches over a part of Lord Harewood's Estate known as Wigton Moor, and is of a natural moorland character, with springy fairways out through a profusion of heather, whins, and shrubs. It is plentifully and cunningly bunkered and has greens undulating, interesting, but never unfair - as fine as can be found anywhere. Like the Old Course at St Andrews, Alwoodley runs almost straight out and back. Its outward and inward halves are of almost equal length but it is generally accepted that the inward nine are slightly tougher, because most of it is played into the prevailing wind - a clean, fresh wind which blows straight off the Yorkshire Moors. The course is extremely testing. The three par fives on the first half of the course usually demand "three to the green" from even the best players. With gorse and heather always ready to penalise the wayward shot, position and accuracy is essential. The most interesting of the par 5's is the 546 yards/499 metres 8th, a perfect example of a dogleg. The scratch golfer, by taking his courage in his hands and the short line skirting the wood may reach the green in two. The average golfer playing a safe drive is faced with a number of options caused by the numerous hazards, making the second shot crucial. Any error will almost certainly lead to a dropped shot or worse. The 11th can be listed amongst the very best par 3''s in the country. It is an island green surrounded with hazards and it is essential to hit the putting surface. The closing four holes, all over 400 yards /360 metres, produce a finish of championship dimensions and combined they provide a magnificent finish to a magnificent course. Alwoodley is a championship course and it is suggested that all players should be regular club golfers with a bona fide handicap! Play should only be from yellow tees unless express permission to play the white tees. Dress codes have to be strictly followed.
