About the course
Royal Lytham & St Annes is rated #17 of "The 100 Greatest Courses in the British Isles", Golf World 11/96, and #58 of Top 100 World Courses. If first impressions can be deceptive in golf as in everything else, this is particularly true of Royal Lytham and St. Annes. At the end of a street in very modest surroundings bordered on three side by housing estates and on one side by a railway line you will come across one of the world's great golf courses. Lytham, as it is generally known, is not breathtakingly beautiful. But the more you play and study this course, the more you will admire its greatness in the shot value and the demands it will make on the championship player. Lytham's narrow fairways are of pure linksland turf. The greens are small and many of them are raised but on almost all of them there is enough space to take a running approach shot. The fairways run every direction so that in the course of a round you will be confronted with the wind at every turn. Lytham has an enormous number of bunkers (approx. 200 !), and as would be expected of any Open Championship course long, accurate careful striking, and calculated putting on delicately contoured green are absolute musts. Altogether it is a splendid golf course. The clubhouse has a dining room, bars, card rooms and a snooker room with two full-sized tables.
