About the course
Set in the heart of the Duke of Bedford's estate Woburn is a modern Golf and Country Club created in a style which matches its noble setting. The club provides unrivalled facilities not only for private individuals and their families but also for companies wishing to entertain their clients in secluded surroundings of outstanding natural beauty. The focal points of the club's activities are the two golf coures, the Duke's and Duchess, which are already acknowledged as outstanding examples of golf course architecture. Woburn's Duke's Course ranks no. 48 of the 100 greatest courses in the British Isles (Golf World Magazine 11/96). The Duke's course, scene of top professional events, has been created upon some of the finest inland golfing country in Europe. There are magnificent trees with pine, silver birch and chestnut predominating and some fairways are framed in tumbling masses of rhododendrons. Heather, bracken and gorse add to its charm as well as providing natural hazards at most of the holes. Slightly shorter in length, the Duchess course is cut from more formal pine forest. Its rolling fairways and subtle contours are deceptively structured to test the golfer's full repertoire and strokes. An intrigating feature is the ancient Danish fortification and military earthworks which crosses the course at some of the holes. The courses are set some 500 feet/152 metres above sea level with superb views across Buckingshamshire and beyond. They are constructed on free-draining sandy sub-soil, which ensures perfect conditions for most of the year. The clubhouse was especially designed in home profile so as to blend unobtrusively with the surrounding woodlands and skilful choice of natural material has created privacy and quiet comfort. The dining room offers an excellent cuisine for both luncheon and dinner; the lounge, which also includes a bar, opens out on to the patio and putting green with a view of the 1st hole and the 18th green on the Duke's course. The extensive practice ground is conveniently near the clubhouse and the well-equipped professional's shop which also supplies the needs of those wishing to enjoy the two courses and the all-weather-tennis courts. The open air heated swimming pool forms a natural gathering point for families.
