About the course
Golf courses attached to country hotels sometimes have the reputation of being suitable for leisurely holidaymakers wanting to 'knock a ball around', but too short and easy to attract low-handicap players in search of a serious test. That criticism could not be made of the Manor House course because, however short it might have been by modern standards, it was never easy to play by the good golfer seeking a good score. Laid out by the late Mr. J.W. Abercrombie, a famous golf architect of his day, the course was remodelled and extended to fulfil its proper function as a first-class course attached to a first-class hotel. The leisurely holidaymaker and his wife can still potter around its greens, cushiony fairways, seeking relaxation and exercise in enjoyable surroundings; but the tiger can open his shoulders and find a challenge to his skill at almost every hole. Trees, gentle slopes, chuckling trout streams, smooth expansive fairways, distant views of Dartmoor, and the vivid colours of shrubs and flowers delight eye and ear. The round starts off with a par 4, the tee shot is over the brow of a slope which slips gently sideways towards Bovey, which runs first along the left side of the fairway and then across the front of the green. The drive must be placed well to the right to allow for this slope and ensure the ball finishing in a good position for the subsequent pitch over the stream. The 2nd, an interesting dogleg with again a challenge to the tiger but an easy way round for the less ambitious player. The closer one goes to the trees which form the inside angle of the dogleg the more straightforward is the shot to the green, which again must be across the stream. There is a general air of spaciousness allied with sylvan beauty, and the ascent to the summit of Manor Tor, 800 feet/244 metres above sea level near the 16th green, guarded on the left by a deep hollow. The 17th drops down the hill again past a tree-covered hillock, with a tricky downhill approach to the green. From the 18th tee set back against a clump of trees the drive is straightforward and the long second shot is aimed at a plateau green carved out of the bracken within putting distance of the hotel's front door.
