About the course

Hunstanton is widely recognised as a fine example of the links type of course, a stern test of a golfer's ability, particularly when the wind is blowing hard as it frequently does along the rather exposed shoreline. The prevailing wind is from the southwest, which gives some help up to the 8th hole, but makes the final two holes on the inward half particularly severe. The layout of the course provides plenty of variety, and the fast greens are a delight to putt on. The first tee is immediately in front of the clubhouse, and calls for a fairly straightforward shot over a bunker no more than 150 yards/137 metres away onto a fairway running up to the green. However the bunker is exceptionally large, and this together with the knowledge that the clubhouse cognoscenti are watching with interest, makes the first shot of the round a daunting affair. All being well, and the fairway having been found, a shortish shot to the green gives promise of an opening par 4 but bunkers lurk on either side of the green to catch the stray shot. From the elevated tee to the left of the 1st green, you now drive to a generously wide fairway, hopefully the bunkers to left and right will be avoided, and assuming this happy result, it is important not to miss-cue into the large bunkers on either side of a ridge some 150 yards/137 metres short of the green, as these extract full penalty. The greenside hazards should provide no problems, but a ditch abuts the left hand side of the green to catch the over strong approach shot. The 6th hole calls for a good straight drive, because the second shot to the plateau green leaves no room for error. As well as bunkers to the left and right of the front edge, the ground falls away steeply on both sides of the green, and a ball just running over may come to rest 15 feet/4 metres) or more below the putting surface. The 8th hole is a shortish par 5 made more difficult by the public 'right of way' which crosses the fairway around the 230 yards/210 metres mark. The green is built into the face of a natural hillock, with grass behind, and the steep bank at the front closely mown, so that a shot not quite 'home' will run back towards you. To the 17th tee, and only two holes to go before you are back at the clubhouse - both are very testing. The contours of the ground tend to take the ball to the right of the fairway, and thus the approach shot to the green which is cut into the side of the ridge is nearly always at an angle. This shot must be up, since the bank to the green is steep, but the ridge above may give some aid to the bold. A feature of the final hole is a very large bunker which juts into the fairway on the left hand side. Assuming you are safely past it you are faced with a choice, for a sandy path crosses the fairway some 60 yards/54 metres) short of the green, and if your ball lands here you must play it where it lies. The brave may go for the green, and the prudent play short, but whatever your choice the approach must be accurate, since there is a grassy gully to the left, and a steep drop on the right of the green. Recovery from either side is difficult, and it is not impossible to visit both sides. Hunstanton's course is rated #28 of "The 100 greatest courses in the British Isles", Golf World 11/96.
