About the course
Llanymynech Golf Club was formed in 1933 and has grown from an orginal 9 holes, basically the existing back 9, to its current 18-hole layout when the 4th, 5th and 6th holes were opened in 1971. These 3 holes are in England whereas the rest of the course is in Wales. The 4th hole is unique in that you drive off in Wales and putt out in England. The course itself is situated on the site of a Roman Hill Fort and research exists to give evidence that Caractacus fought one of his last battles here against the Roman invadors. Offa's Dyke forms one of the boundaries to the course. Visitors are now more warmly welcomed and cannot fail to enjoy and appreciate both the challenging layout of the course and the glorious views. On a clear day it is said that 7 of the old English and Welsh Shire counties can be seen from the 12th tee. The course makes excellent use of the natural features and no two holes are the same. The 12th and the 17th, both par fours, are invariably out of reach in two to the average golfer. Many a card has been spoilt over the last 3 holes and the temptation to throw oneself over the drop which exists a few yards to the right of the 18th green must be resisted. The club is a member of the Shropshire and Herefordshire County Union and although being 80% in Wales is affiliated to the English Golf Union.
