About the course

This club has a regulation eighteen hole course and a nine hole executive course. The Main Course has small greens and wide fairways. There are several sand bunkers on the course, and water hazards come into play on two holes. "Golf Digest" rated this 10th out of "America's 100 Greatest Courses" for 1995-96, and 13th in 1997-98. The same publication rated it the "Best in State" course for 1995-96, and #1 again in 1997-98. In addition, "GOLF Magazine" rated it 21st among the "Top 100 Courses in the U.S." in 1995, 20th in 1997 and 19th in 1999. "GOLFWEEK" afforded it 20th in the category of "100 Best Classical Courses" in 1997 and 1999, and 21st in 1998. The executive Primrose Course has elevated greens and narrow fairways. Water hazards come into play on three holes. When special tournament play occurs and the club needs a championship length course, they combine different holes from each of the courses to create a temporary 7,010 yard course for the use of club members. This is the other tee shown. This club was originally founded in 1882 and has been listed by the USGA as one of the first 100 clubs established in the U.S. "GOLF Magazine" also recognized the club on its 1995 list of the "First 100 Clubs in America." The 1913, 1963, and 1988 U.S. Opens were held here. The winners were Francis Ouimet, Julius Boros and Curtis Strange.
