About the course
Vilamoura is a special place, a unique leisure and recreation resort community where the pace of life is so easy it feels like summer all year round. Designed from the start to be self-sufficient, Vilamoura is ideally located, features a wide choice of prime accommodation, offers the commercial structure for day-to-day needs and is bursting with sporting and leisure facilities for the whole family. It is a place for rest and relaxation but also fur pursuing active pastimes and sports; a friendly and safe residential haven, but also a vibrant and exciting night-life centre. It is a luxury hotel, a private villa or a serviced apartment for the visitor, but also a home to the resident and seasonal population. It is Portuguese, but also truly cosmopolitan. Marina - The Ambiance As far back as the 1st century, seafaring Romans sought out Vilamoura not only as a centre of commerce and trade, but also as a site where they could rest and relax, reaping the benefits of a mild climate and bountiful conditions. Today the heritage is maintained as yachtsmen from all over the world, continue to seek safe harbour at the Vilamoura Marina. The benevolent climate, with seemingly endless days of clear blue skies, enhances every pastime, be it a stroll on the Marina quay, an afternoon on the beach, a round of golf or a tour of the surrounding countryside. The Algarve summer, moderated by cool Atlantic breezes, is dry and warm. The superb spring and autumn seasons have an air quality that makes colours dazzle with brilliance. The temperate winters offer the shirt-sleeve weather so beloved by visitors from other climates.
For many who love the sport, the name Vilamoura is synonymous with golf. Consistently ranked as one of Europe's top golfing destinations, Vilamoura and its courses offer value, variety and challenge. The technical excellence of the courses is self-evident: the tournaments hosted by Vilamoura include the Portuguese Open and various other championships are held here every year. The three existing courses, two 18-hole and one 27-hole, offer enough golf to test every aspect of a player's game. The Old Course, inaugurated in 1969, is considered the Grande Dame of Algarve golf and with the major improvements carried out in 1996, will remain a premier course. The course was re-opened in April 1997 after a year's closure for restoration, improvements and the construction of a modern clubhouse. Famous for a classic layout which employs the native umbrella pines and the natural character of the landscape to best advantage. The newcomers, Vilamoura Pinhal golf course and Laguna golf course, each with clubhouse and practice facilities, have matured into fine courses in their own right and with their own formidable characters. During the next few years, a further 27 holes are planned. Vilamoura will then offer five full-sized 18-hole courses designed to satisfy all levels of playing ability. Golf packages are available. Other attractions: Active visitors and residents have nearly every conceivable sport on their doorstep to choose from: horse riding centre, an olympic shooting club, a lawn bowling club, a tennis club and sport centres offering squash, badminton, weight training and aerobics. Most of the hotels and aparthotels provide their own tennis and fitness facilities. Three kilometres of golden sands lay directly before Vilamoura, the much photographed Falésia beach with the stunning beauty of its colourful sandstone cliffs stretches into the distance. For something different, sailing trips along the coast can be booked complete with stops for a barbecue on the beach of a secluded cove. Tours of the Algarve often include dining at local restaurants specialising in regional dishes.
